[ARCHIVED] FPD warns of recent IRS telephonic scam

June 13, 2014

The Fishers Police Department is urging residents to be aware of a recent telephonic scam.

Over the past couple of days officers have responded to several reports of residents receiving suspicious telephone calls at their homes. The caller (perpetrator) claimed to be with the IRS and explained the resident owed back taxes. The perpetrator also informed the homeowner that an arrest warrant would be issued, by the Fishers Police Department, if they did not immediately pay the amount owed.

Thankfully these residents recognized the calls as suspicious and did not fall victim to this scam. In these situations we recommend residents simply hang up the phone. The IRS has recently released information regarding this scam http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/IRS-Reiterates-Warning-of-Pervasive-Telephone-Scam

We also encourage any resident that feels they have be a victim of a scam to immediately contact the Hamilton County Dispatch Center, at 317-773-1282, and request to file a report with a Fishers police officer.
