The City of Fishers will expand its annual MLK Day celebration in 2023 with a community-wide food drive on January 16. In addition, the City will host volunteer opportunities throughout the holiday weekend to encourage residents to give back during the National Day of Service.

With local food pantries experiencing an increase in demand and decrease in supply after the busy holiday season, the City of Fishers has partnered with Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County to replenish these resources. On Monday, January 16, food donations will be collected with a Pack the Bus event at eight Fishers park properties in conjunction with HSE Schools, and at the city’s three Kroger stores between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Residents can also order donations and have them delivered directly to the City through an Amazon Wish List. A list of donation needs is available for ThisIsFishers.com/MLK. This event is supported by partners Good Samaritan Network of Hamilton County, Memory Ventures, Kroger, and HSE Schools.

Food drop locations include:

  • Brooks School Park: 11780 Brooks School Road
  • Cyntheanne Park: 12383 Cyntheanne Road
  • Flat Fork Creek Park: 16141 E. 101st Street
  • Harrison Thompson Park: 13573 Conner Knoll Parkway
  • Nickel Plate District Amphitheater: 6 Municipal Drive
  • Holland Park: 1 Park Drive
  • Saxony Hall: 13362 Pennington Road
  • Heritage Park: 10595 Eller Road
  • Kroger: 9799 E. 116th Street
  • Kroger: 11700 Olio Road
  • Kroger: 7272 Fishers Crossing Drive

For residents looking to give back through volunteerism, opportunities are available throughout the weekend around Fishers, including onsite support to assist with the food drive. Other opportunities including onion seed planting at the Fishers AgriPark, trash pick up at Flat Fort Creek Park, and a Christmas tree mulch spread at Billericay Park.

Along with opportunities to give back, Conner Prairie and the Hamilton East Public Library will host special programming in honor of Dr. King. Conner Prairie will host a free admission day on Monday, January 16 with special programming focused on identity, belonging, community, and love. Conner Prairie is currently hosting a Be Love essay contest for students to win a Conner Prairie membership. Submissions are due tomorrow, January 6. Hamilton East Public Library has partnered with HSE Schools to host Living the Dream: A Community Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther, King Jr. on Sunday, January 15 from 1-2 p.m. at the Fishers Library. This free event will bring together students and staff from HSE Schools, community members, and City leaders to honor Dr. King’s legacy.
