This past summer, Fishers City Councilmen Todd Zimmerman and Eric Moeller provided a fund for a hands-on service-oriented learning opportunity for local high school students. Eight students set out to collect applications, develop selection criteria and administer the philanthropic process.
The students unanimously selected a hydroponic garden concept developed by three Fishers Elementary School staff members, Denise Jarrett, Teresa Miller and Lori Fox.
“The seriousness and care in which the eight high school students used in selecting the hydroponic garden proposal from Fishers Elementary has been rewarding to observe,” said Fishers City Councilor, Eric Moeller. “In an era where many of us have lost sight of exactly where our food comes from, the garden will provide students an excellent hands-on experience in the academic disciplines of science and nutrition.”
Fishers Elementary School students will have an opportunity to be a part of the school community lunch program and learn how to maintain the garden.
“I feel the hydroponic garden has the potential to bring more students into various science and project based learning,” said Fishers Elementary School Principal, Brian Sloan.
Both the councilmen and Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation hope this project spurs new collaborative learning projects that will bring the community together.
"My hope is that this fund spurs on collaborative efforts between the community and our learning environments, said Fishers City Councilor, Todd Zimmerman. "Through generous support, our community can participate in this learning process, observing first hand as students and teachers work hand in hand to inspire, create, and launch new projects. The hydroponic garden is the first of I what I believe will be many exciting new ventures in discovery."
