This Saturday wraps up National Public Works Week, but our appreciation for Fishers Department of Public Works is never ending. While each city department has an integral role and function, Fishers DPW supports all of our departments and our residents in ways that most of us don’t consider on a daily basis.
Residents had an opportunity to learn more about DPW at the annual Touch-a-Truck event earlier this week. Families came out to the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater where they got to peek at, and even climb inside, some of the city’s fleet vehicles.
DPW’s daily duties are far-reaching. They are the backbone of many of our city’s functions and programs. The summer concert series that many residents enjoy couldn’t happen without the help of DPW, nor could Keep Fishers Beautiful or many of our other highly anticipated community events. The department’s daily responsibilities include maintenance of 1,700 lane miles of roads, wastewater treatment plant operations and parks and school grounds maintenance.
In the fall of 2013, Fishers DPW became the 88th agency in the nation —and the first agency in the state of Indiana — to become fully APWA accredited. Just last spring they launched a Critical Response Team in conjunction with Fishers Fire Department to assist in emergency situations.
