Traffic Technician
Position Type: Full-Time

Salary Range: $43,061.00 - $52,410.00 Annually

Location: City Hall, Fishers, Indiana

Position Description: 

The City of Fishers has seen dramatic growth in the last three decades and with that growth has come the need to maintain, adapt and expand the City's transportation network accordingly. The newly created Traffic Technician position will be responsible for road traffic related functions to improve the operations of this network and will be tasked with performing technical work in relation to the City's traffic systems and other related devices.

Examples of Duties

  • Manage traffic signal design, maintenance, and modernization projects, including monitoring work for proper completion, authorizing contract payments and periodically re-timing the signals to improve performance.
  • Manage proactive approach to traffic signal timing management, including arterials corridors using adaptive traffic signal system control, and at stand-alone traffic signals.
  • Assist with department transportation planning and programming activities, including transportation and traffic studies, and consulting with the Director regarding transportation priorities, scope and objectives.
  • Periodically assist in representing department at design review meetings and public hearings.
  • Perform traffic counts, safety studies, speed studies, sight distance studies.
  • Investigate traffic problems and accidents, including inspecting problem sites, reviewing accident reports and/or conducting traffic counts, writing reports and correspondence, and recommending appropriate action to the Director of Engineering.
  • Assist in inspecting contractual road construction projects, ensuring compliance with state and local codes, specifications, contract obligations, tracking costs, and quantities.
  • Maintain pavement marking and sign inventories, including evaluating and coordinating contractual striping.
  • As needed, performs surveying, drafting functions (using computer aided drafting) and coordinate with other staff regarding standards and plans.
  • Periodically research courthouse records for land deeds, right-of-way descriptions, land covenants, and action of the City Council or Board of Public Works and Safety.
  • Routinely coordinate with INDOT and other municipalities, utilities, drainage districts, and railroads to coordinate City activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates/Technical degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a combination of closely related field and moderate experience (minimum of four years of related experience).  ATTSA Signal Tech Level 1 and/or Level 2 preferred, but not required; Valid Driver's License; Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of people both verbally and in writing; Ability to handle several projects at the same time and work independently; Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and in/around construction sites.
