126th Street Reconstruction Project back
Date of Record: September 8, 2009

126th Street Reconstruction Project

Updates as of January 19, 2010
  • The entrance to Hawk's Landing subdivision off of 126th Street will be closed beginning January 20th. All access to the subdivision should be attained from the back entrance, either through Gray Eagle or off of Olio Road. This entrance will be closed until late Spring while the contractor installs storm sewer and pours new concrete.
  • 126th Street is now open to two way trafic from Westmorland Drive to Pennington Road. While the road is open to trafic the area is still a construction zone and the speed limit is 30 mph. The bridge on the east side of Pennington Road remains closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
  • The intersection at Brooks School Road and 126th Street is now open.
  • Storm sewer and milling work is complete from Westmorland Drive to Brooks School Road on the north and south side of 126th Street.
  • The bridge over Mud Creek was closed on September 8, 2009 and will remain closed until May of 2010.

As you are aware, the expansion of 126th Street is underway near your neighborhood. We want to stay in touch with you about the project and better inform you about some of the details.

Eighty percent of the project is federally funded, which means some of the tax money you have sent to Washington D.C. is coming back to our community. While the involvement of federal funding is beneficial from a financial standpoint, it means the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has taken over the project.

Because INDOT, rather than the Town, is managing the project, providing you a definitive timeline for completion becomes more difficult. We will update our website regularly with status reports. If you desire to check the status periodically, please bookmark this page  and visit it to obtain current information.

INDOT has informed us that it could complete the project six (6) months quicker by shutting down portions 126th Street in a phased manner. As you know, the sections from Olio Road to Brook School Road, and from Brooks School Road to east of Hoosier Road, were closed weeks ago. It is our hope that INDOT completes 126th Street between east of Hoosier Road to Olio Road by early next summer.

Once that phase is completed, the bridge over I-69 and the intersection of Hoosier Road and 126th Street will then be closed for reconstruction. The final phase is from Promise Road to State Road 37, which should be bid next year with construction starting in late 2010.

Please note that while it may appear at times that minimal, or no work is being performed, utility work is underway for the entire first phase. The utilities have to be relocated or installed before road and bridge construction can begin. Several utility coordination meetings were held well in advance of the start of the project. But sometimes the utility companies move at pace that is much slower than we like for a variety of reasons.

Over the last several years, Fishers has experienced vibrant growth while many communities in our state have struggled. One of the necessary consequences of growth is the need to provide excellent infrastructure. We ask for your patience as this project moves forward. While painful in the short run, when the project is completed, traffic flow and safety will improve significantly and it will be a long-term asset to our community.
