Education and Safety
| Division Chief of Education Chad Abel |
The Fishers Fire Department Division of Education and Safety exists to provide the most up-to-date and relevant training possible to the members of the department. The division consists of one Division Chief, one Captain, and one Administrative Assistant. It is also enhanced by assistance from the 43 staff officers and shift personnel certified as fire and/or emergency medical service instructors. The Education and Safety Division is not only responsible for coordinating training activities for fire, EMS, rescue, and hazardous materials, but also provides incident safety officers to respond to working incidents throughout the Town of Fishers and surrounding communities. The division is also responsible for injury reporting and risk reduction for the department.
The Fishers Fire Department maintains a training site at a soon to be retired waste water treatment facility. This facility provides limited, but important capabilities. The Town of Fishers is currently participating in the development of a proposed training facility to serve the needs of public safety agencies in Hamilton County. Until then, the department relies heavily on acquiring structures scheduled for demolition to fulfill its training needs. Go to our Acquired Structure Program page for more information on donating structures for training purposes.
The training division makes every effort to stay current with the newest trends and technology available to today's educators. The training room at Station 91 (Fire Department Headquarters) is linked to the four substations. This allows apparatus to stay in their primary districts and keeps response times as low as possible. The video conferencing also allows for an upgrade in the computer network between stations providing quicker access to information. The possibilities created through distance learning are endless.
The Education and Safety Division is planning to bring more training to the firefighters through web and computer-based programs, to keepthe Fishers Fire Department in tune with the most up-to-date information available.
