Special Census Update (June 2, 2004)
Detailed Special Census results received by Fishers officials reveal that, as the town's population continues to grow, its community becomes increasingly diverse compared to 2000.
Highlights of the town's changing demographic patterns from the U.S. Census Bureau reveal:
- The growth rate of the Town's African American population was 59 percent, from 2.9 percent of the Town's total population in 2000 to 4.6 percent in 2003, which exceeded the Town's overall growth rate by nearly two-thirds. The Town's Asian population grew by 32 percent, from 3.1 percent in 2000 to 4.1 percent in 2003, and its Hispanic and Latino population grew by 30 percent, from 2 percent in 2000 to 2.6 percent in 2003.
- With respect to age demographics, the largest growth compared to 2000 occurred in the 85 years and over category (+173 percent), followed by 75 to 84 years (+74 percent), 55 to 59 years (+68 percent), 60 to 64 years (+59 percent), and 10 to 14 years (+55 percent).
- A 35 percent increase in the number of housing units, a 35 percent increase of married-couple families with children under 18 years, and a 46 percent increase of householders 65 years and over.

Special Census Update (March 4, 2004)
Town of Fishers officials received the results of its special census, and, as of November 7, 2003 according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Town's population as 52,390, up from 37,835 in 2000.
Town of Fishers officials estimate that the Town is entitled to more than $4 million (more than $600,000 per year) from the State until the next decennial census in 2010.
Special Census Update (January 9, 2004)
The Town's special census has officially concluded. It began on November 7, 2003 and ended January 5, 2004. The Town should have final population figures in the spring of 2004.
On behalf of the Fishers Town Council, a heartfelt thanks to the community for participating in the special census by being counted, and to the roughly 165 census workers who helped the Town conduct its special census. Without the help and dedication of so many individuals, the success of Fishers' special census would not have been as great.

About the Town of Fishers Special Census
The Town of Fishers conducted a special census because of an estimated 32 percent population increase since the community's last census in 2000. The information that was gathered during the special census is critical because it may yield the community approximately $3,500,000 more in population-based revenue from the state of Indiana over the next seven years. The additional funding will be used for capital improvements, such as road improvement projects, necessary to responsibly manage the Town's significant growth.
The Town needed approximately 450 applicants to fill several temporary special census positions (for more information about special census positions, click here), and the application deadline was October 8, 2003.
Enumerators (field census workers) went door-to-door to conduct personal interviews in an effort to collect information about each Fishers household. The information that was collected covers seven basic areas: name, age, gender, race and Hispanic origin (if applicable) of everyone in the household, the relationship between household members, and whether the household is owned or rented.
Additional information about the census:
- Hours of enumeration were from 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Saturday, and noon and 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
- Enumerators were FBI background-checked.
