Investigations Division
The mission of the Criminal Investigation Division is to provide to the community the protection of uncovering crimes before they are committed and to bring to justice those criminals who choose to commit crimes within our community. We strive to achieve these goals and it would not be possible if it were not the result of a total community and law enforcement effort.
The Criminal Investigations Division was formed formally on January 1, 1990 under the direction of Chief George G. Kehl. Chief Kehl realized as our community grew that the criminal element would become more active within our community. The division started with one full time police officer assigned to investigate crimes on a full time basis. In 1990, the hiring of more employees allowed the division obtained its second full-time investigator.
Since then, we have added multiple sworn investigators and evidence technicians, as well as a civilian property room officer and administrative assistant. We also have trained multiple Uniformed Services Officers to assist in evidence recovery & detection to help with rapid recognition, preservation, and collection of items relevant to the case.
The Special Investigations Division provides the primary narcotics and vice investigative service and support to the Fishers Police Department and the community. It is the responsibility of this division to conduct major narcotic, vice and organized crime investigations. The division is also responsible for gathering, analyzing and disseminating criminal intelligence. It is our mission to investigate these crimes, identify the perpetrators and prepare the cases for successful prosecution. The division also assists other law enforcement agencies with the use of specialized technical surveillance equipment and the use of undercover personnel.
The division since 1990 has assigned investigators to the Hamilton/Boone County Drug Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, and Zionsville Police Departments, as well as the Boone County Sheriff's Departments. This multi-agency approach to crime has resulted in the seizure of large amounts of various illegal narcotics and weapons and the incarceration of a large number of violent offenders.
These divisions will continue to grow to meet the growing need of preserving the mission of the divisions.
