Patrol operates on four rotating 12-hour shifts with two dayshift and two nightshift squads, each headed by a shift commander holding the rank of Lieutenant as well as two Field Sergeants. The division is currently staffed by 61 sworn uniform officers plus a reserve contingent.
The Patrol Division operates 24 hours a day with dispatching services being provided by the Hamilton County Communications Center. Patrol officers respond to a variety of service related calls, such as traffic accidents, ordinance violations, or other calls for assistance. However, the Division primarily concentrates on responding to crimes against persons and property and, where feasible, preventing such occurrences with a highly visible presence and proactive community enforcement measures. Recently, Fishers was rated the safest city in America.
Specialized units, such as a Motorized Traffic Enforcement Unit, Evidence Technicians, and K-9 Officers are also under the command of the Patrol Division. The Patrol Division is also proud to be the primary supporters in manpower of the Emergency Response Team and the Dive and Water Recovery Team.
The Fishers Police Department places a high priority on training. The Patrol Division contains many expert instructors in various specialties such as Firearms, Emergency Vehicle Operation, DARE, Crisis Intervention, Bike Patrol and Accident Reconstruction. These instructors not only train officers on this department, but are often invited to share their expertise statewide by instructing at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
